Sam and Frodo

Laboratorium.net

I'm catching up on James Grimmelmann's fine journal after a time away. If you visit http://www.laboratorium.net/ you'll find some excellent writing and some excellent geekery. My favorite bit at present is his July 26 entry, which tells me more about surveying than I understood before, in the style appropriate for a math geek to grok.

Firefly woo-hoo!

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- The short-lived TV series "Firefly" is moving to the big screen.

After taking his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" feature film and turning it into a successful TV series, "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon is about to do the reverse with his Fox cult hit, which will be released theatrically by Universal Pictures.

In addition to adapting it for the big screen, Whedon will also make his feature directorial debut with the project. Plans are to see "Firefly" go into production in first-quarter 2004.

I just added the above to my userinfo... so let me explain.

gender_petition's goal is for LJ to add at least one alternative to the LiveJournal userstats where you can choose "male" or "female" (you do have the option to leave it blank).

One alternative discussed is to add "other" as an option. They're waiting for the community to reach a membership of 1000 before voting on what precisely to petition for. So join if you're interested!

I must say LJ has been more responsive already than the website where I brought this up to the admins myself. I was basically told to get a life. Those who have been there get no points for guessing which site I mean.

music on both coasts

Carbon Leaf is coming back to Boston. I saw them open for Great Big Sea and they were perfect for the gig. They'll be at Harper's Ferry on September 20.

Meanwhile, Da Vinci's Notebook (a fine fine geeky a cappella group you should see if you haven't, and see again if you have) is visiting the West Coast this month. Seattle-ites can see them September 20 at Tractor Tavern. Everyone else, find gig info at http://www.davincisnotebook.com/upcoming.htm --meanwhile I'm trying to figure out whether I have any urge to seek them out in Northampton....
